Robins & Morton to Sponsor Two Competitors at 2015 National Craft Championships
Birmingham, Ala., February 23, 2015- Robins & Morton is sponsoring two craftsmen in the pipe welding segment at the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) National Craft Championships. The competition will be held March 3-6 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The National Craft Championship is a way to facilitate training and growth in the future workforce.
Currently, both competitors work on the Tampa Electric Co. (TECO) project in Mulberry, Florida. The project involves the conversion of 4 Operating 7FA Gas Turbine/Generators to Combined Cycle with 4 Vogt HRSGs and a 550 MW Alstom STG. This conversion to a more efficient configuration will generate an additional 460 megawatts of electricity for use in Tampa Electric’s service area.
Shanice Kirkland is currently working as a pipe welder on Robins & Morton’s at Tampa Electric Co. (TECO) project in Mulberry, Florida. Prior to working at the TECO project, Shanice worked as a pipefitter helper on the CARBO site where she certified as a plate welder and competed as a structural welder in last year’s competition. Her training efforts include blueprint reading, base metal preparation, welding safety and oxyfuel cutting. In her leisure time, Shanice enjoys watching a movie with friends, going to the mall and reading a book.
Juan Aguilar is currently enrolled in the welding program at the Tampa Electric Co. (TECO) project in Mulberry, Florida, where he has been working as a civil supervisor. Aguilar’s training includes welding safety, welding quality, equipment setup and blueprint reading. In his spare time, he enjoys hunting, fishing, cooking, and cleaning his cars.
National Craft Championships, sponsored by Associated Builder and Contractors (ABC), highlights craft trainees demonstrating their skills and knowledge during an intense written exam and practical performance test. This competition will be held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida March 3-6, 2015. Competitors from across the United States representing several merit shop contractors in varied crafts will compete for the gold.
