Auburn University Science Laboratory Center
Owner: Auburn University
Location: Auburn, Alabama
Architect: Gresham Smith & Partners
Description: Project description: The Auburn University Science Laboratory Center project included the construction of a complex comprised of three buildings and three phases of construction located in the heart of Auburn University’s campus. The first phase of construction involved partially demolishing the three floor, 81,000 square-foot Saunders Hall chemistry building and removal of the University’s medical cottage. Phase two included a new five-story, 105,000 square-foot laboratory building; a two-story, 31,000 square-foot classroom and administration building; and a 300-seat auditorium. The Auburn University Science Laboratory Center was Auburn University’s first Construction Management project of the approximate $400 million dollar construction undertaking to modernize Auburn’s campus. Prior to this project, there had been minimal construction on campus since the 1960’s and 1980’s. The Auburn University Science Laboratory Center project included the construction of three buildings and three phases of construction located in the heart of Auburn University’s campus. The first phase of construction involved partially demolishing the three floor, 81,000 square-foot Saunders Hall chemistry building and removal of the University’s medical cottage. Phase two, the construction of the complex, included a five-story, 105,000 square-foot laboratory building; a two-story, 31,000 square-foot classroom and administration building; and a 300-seat, 9,600 square-foot auditorium. The two story classroom and 300 seat auditorium completed in the fall of 2004, in time for the spring semester. The larger and more complicated laboratory building completed two months ahead of schedule in the spring of 2005, allowing the College of Science and Mathematics the opportunity to test drive their new facility during the summer semester. After the chemistry labs were relocated from Saunders Hall to the new laboratory building, the remainder of Saunders Hall was torn down to complete phase three of the Auburn University Science Laboratory Center project.
