Robins & Morton awarded construction contract for Tampa Electric’s Polk Power Station expansion project
Tampa Electric Co. has selected Robins & Morton to provide construction services for Phase 2 of its Polk County Power Station expansion. The $700 million project involves the conversion of four existing natural gas-fired combustion turbines into a more efficient combined-cycle configuration that will generate an additional 460 megawatts of electricity for use in Tampa Electric’s service area. This Power Station will create enough electricity to power 100,000 homes. In addition to improving the electrical generation efficiency, the project will also reduce the power plant emissions.
Robins & Morton mobilized in mid-June. The project will create nearly 500 new construction jobs that are expected to fuel the local economy throughout the two year project duration. Robins & Morton is working with local organizations to identify, train and develop skilled craftspeople from Mulberry and the surrounding communities.
“This project award is a great testament to our team’s hard work and dedication,” said Bryson Edmonds, Sr. Vice President Robins & Morton. “We are excited to be able to help Tampa Electric expand its facility and increase its ability to serve customers with reliable, low emissions electricity. Further, our work on this project will allow us to build important and long lasting relationships with Tampa Electric and Black & Veatch, Tampa Electric’s engineering partner.”
The projected completion date for Polk Power Station’s expansion is January 2017.
