Robins & Morton to Sponsor 5 Competitors at 2014 National Craft Championships

Birmingham, Ala., – On April 29th – May 2nd, six craftsmen from Robins & Morton’s CARBO jobsite will compete in his respective craft at the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) National Craft Championships in Birmingham, Ala. The National Craft Championships are the embodiment of ABC’s continuing commitment to foster growth and excellence in training among the nation’s future workforce.

While training for the competition, all five competitors are performing work at CARBO where Robins & Morton is currently performing EPC services for a grassroots ceramic proppant manufacturing facility in Millen Ga., The scope of work includes: 3 Baghouses, rotary kilns and cooler, centrifuges, spray dryers, compressors, kiln stack, centrifugal slurry pumps, fabricated duct work, prefabricated electrical buildings and emergency generator. The new lines will provide 500,000 tons of proppant. Direct hire work force will peak around 250 and overall construction forces will peak around 450.

THE COMPETITORS:

Christopher Meadows has been employed by Robins & Morton‘s Power & Industrial division as an electrical helper for the past 6 months. He is currently assigned to the CARBO job. His duties include pulling wire, terminating cables, installing conduit and cable tray. At Robins & Morton’s CARBO project, he has been actively engaged in training and has completed core training and twelve electrical modules. Christopher’s hometown is Augusta, Georgia.

Sammy Barwick is a millwright helper at Robins & Morton. He is assigned to the CARBO job in Millen, Georgia. His duties include: align pumps and motors, set pumps and motors as well as setting equipment. Sammy has completed the core training as well as various millwright modules in preparation for the upcoming competition. Sammy will compete in the ABC National Craft Competition as Robins & Morton’s millwright competitor. His hometown is Vidalia, Georgia.

William Scavone is employed at the CARBO job as a pipefitter helper where performs the following tasks: cutting and preparing pipe, fitting pipe, performing take offs and taking measurements. William has worked more than two years in the construction industry and he continues to improve his skills and gain knowledge. He is actively enrolled in the Robins & Morton craft training program in which he has completed the core training and more than a dozen pipefitting modules. William’s hometown is Keysville, Georgia.

Demetris Lawson is currently employed at the CARBO project in Millen, Georgia where he works as an iron worker helper. His duties as an iron worker helper include but not limited to bolt up, impact, and connecting. Demetris is a graduate of Southeastern Technical College (a Robins & Morton accredited training and education facility) where he completed welding levels 1, 2, and 3. He continues to participate in welding training that includes safety, welding quality, equipment setup and blueprint reading. His hometown is Reidsville, Georgia.

Shanice Kirkland works as a pipefitter helper at the CARBO project in Millen, Georgia and she performs various duties as such cutting pipe, bolting pipe and pipe preparation. Shanice has been in industry for over a year and has worked two Robins & Morton projects: Kemper and Ergon. At Robins & Morton’s CARBO project, she actively engages in craft training and has completed core curriculum and welding modules. Shanice will compete in the structural welding competition and her hometown is Birmingham, Alabama.

THE COMPETITION:

The ABC National Craft Championships highlights craft trainees demonstrating their skills and knowledge during an intense written exam and practical performance test. This competition will be held in Birmingham, Alabama for the first time, April 29 – May 2. Competitors from across the United States, representing several merit shop contractors in varied crafts, will compete for the gold.
