When Robins & Morton opened its first South Carolina office in downtown Spartanburg in 2015, the city looked drastically different.
The 10-story AC Hotel didn’t tower over Main Street. Wofford College didn’t boast its Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium, Rosalind Sallenger Center for the Arts, or Chandler Center for Environmental Studies. When locals drove by the corner of West Henry Street and Highway 296, they didn’t know they might one day cheer on a new baseball team there.
Since the ‘90s, Robins & Morton has served the Upstate by constructing and renovating landmark projects across the area, beginning with work at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. But opening a permanent office in the Hub City ten years ago signified a lasting commitment to the community. Join us for a look back at our most significant contributions to Spartanburg during the last decade.
AC Hotel Spartanburg
The AC Hotel Spartanburg is a 10-story luxury hotel that serves as a gateway to the west end of downtown. Inspired by European charm and grandeur, this hotel features 114 guest rooms and suites, a rooftop restaurant with panoramic city views, and a variety of amenities including a fitness center, business center, outdoor pool, and flexible meeting spaces. The construction of the hotel was a significant undertaking, involving the use of nearly a quarter-million hand-laid bricks and more than 28 million pounds of concrete. Since Robins & Morton completed the project in 2017, the AC Hotel Spartanburg has become a fixture in Spartanburg’s skyline, serving as a luxurious yet welcoming haven for locals and visitors to Spartanburg.
Wofford College
Robins & Morton has completed 13 projects on the Wofford College campus, covering a total area of 518,856 square feet. The largest buildings we’ve added to the campus include the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium, a state-of-the-art facility for basketball and volleyball; the Rosalind Sallenger Richardson Center for the Arts, which houses academic programs in theatre arts, visual arts, and art history; and the Chandler Center for Environmental Studies. Our other contributions include Snyder Field and Hope Field Softball Stadium, as well as renovations to the Blackwell-Quattlebaum Wellness Center and Burwell Hall. These projects have enhanced the college’s infrastructure, providing modern facilities for athletics, arts, wellness, and on-campus living, while maintaining the historical integrity of the campus, originally established in 1854.
Fifth Third Park
Fifth Third Park, the home of the Hub City Spartanburgers, is a nearly 6,000-seat-capacity, Single-A minor league baseball stadium. It includes 12 premium suites, 7,000 square feet of club and multi-purpose event space, concourse level boxes, and an outfield berm in deep left field. Beyond baseball, the venue is designed to host a variety of events, such as outdoor concerts, festivals, and community gatherings. In April 2025, the stadium welcomed its first visitors to the Wofford College and University of South Carolina Upstate baseball game. The Hub City Spartanburger’s home opener followed two weeks later. Spring 2025 began the first of many seasons at Fifth Third Park, bringing the entire Upstate together to enjoy America’s favorite pastime.
Spartanburg County Municipal Building
In October, Robins & Morton will break ground on its latest project in the heart of downtown —Spartanburg County’s new five-story administrative building. It will contain a new court chamber, meeting spaces, and outdoor areas for public use. The building will consolidate multiple services into a single location and is estimated to complete in 2027.
Building a Legacy
While the last decade brought incredible construction opportunities to the city in the hospitality, sports, and higher education sectors, the best days are still ahead. According to OneSpartanburg, Spartanburg County has recruited 80 economic development projects totaling $5.1 billion in capital investment and has created 5,787 new jobs — all since 2021. This momentum also propelled Spartanburg to be ranked No. 1 in economic investment and job creation in South Carolina and it was named the U.S. Small Metro with the Most Economic Growth by Stessa.
While there is much pride in what’s been accomplished thus far, it is the consistent effort in the next decade — and the next — that will help us continue to improve local quality of life, further building the city’s remarkable legacy.
