Westover Hills Baptist Medical Campus construction officially kicks-off with groundbreaking ceremonies

Groundbreaking ceremonies were held Tuesday, October 11, 2022, officially kicking off construction of the Westover Hills Baptist Medical Campus, which will serve the Westover Hills area as well as people living in far west San Antonio and neighboring counties. The campus sits on 72 acres of land located at Wiseman and Highway 1604. The multi-phased project includes medical office buildings, an ambulatory surgical center and an acute care hospital, with the potential for additional medical and retail entities in future development phases. Investment in the hospital facility totals $230 million dollars.

“Growth in the Westover Hills area has exceeded the supply of medical care available here,” said Matt Stone, Baptist Health System Group CEO. “This new campus will allow people living and working in Westover Hills to stay here for their medical needs, close to family and friends.”

The initial phase of development includes construction of the first of two planned Medical Office Buildings (MOBs), which will bring increased access to primary and specialty care to Westover Hills. The MOBs will house physician offices, outpatient imaging and other ancillary medical services as well as an Ambulatory Surgical Center for elective procedures. Construction of the full-service, acute-care hospital will follow MOB construction. The five story, 104-bed facility will encompass approximately 255,000 square feet. Shell space for future growth will accommodate additional beds. A garden-level floor will incorporate a landscaped area with hardscape and water feature for outdoor dining activities. The hospital will feature emergency, imaging, lab, obstetric, surgical, and inpatient services.

“This campus represents our ongoing commitment to expanding high-quality healthcare access to greater San Antonio,” said Stone. “We see this as a foundational expansion of our network and a critical investment in the communities we serve.”

In addition to providing increased access to medical care, the campus contributes a positive economic impact for the community. Local jobs will be available throughout several years of construction phases as well as the addition of some 500 jobs that will be available in the hospital itself for people who live in Westover Hills and areas nearby.

“The decision to build a hospital in Westover Hills was made based on a detailed assessment that evaluated at the growth of medical needs in the area over the past ten years,” said Brady Phillips, Baptist Health System Chief Strategy Officer. “This development brings critically needed services to the area, including cardiovascular, maternity, and surgical care at a scale that is commensurate with the needs of the community.”

The hospital and medical office buildings are designed by architect ESa. Robins & Morton San Antonio are managing construction of the medical campus.

“We have a long history of success with Tenet Healthcare, parent company of Baptist Health System, and we’re thrilled to embark on this new venture with them,” Robins & Morton Division Manager Eric Groat said. “Their commitment to early partnership with their design and construction teams makes for a truly collaborative experience. We’re excited to help bring this new facility to San Antonio.”

The first Medical Office Building is expected to open in late 2023, with the hospital scheduled to open the following year.
