The Oxford Pharmaceuticals project in Birmingham, Alabama, involved the construction of a 125,000-square-foot facility on a 24-acre site within Jefferson Metropolitan Park Lakeshore. As the client’s first facility in the United States, the building was designed for the research, production, and packaging of pharmaceuticals, with the capacity to employ up to 200 people. The project required the integration of specialized clean rooms, advanced mechanical and electrical systems, and robust security features to meet stringent FDA and DEA requirements, all while adhering to a highly detailed and accelerated schedule.
A key challenge was the coordination of multiple trade contractors within confined spaces, particularly in the manufacturing areas where exposed concrete block and complex equipment installations demanded careful sequencing. Structural complexities included integrating structural steel with load-bearing masonry, which required daily inspections and frequent coordination meetings. The project team also faced scheduling difficulties related to utility installations and ongoing interior design changes due to evolving client-provided equipment. To address these issues, Robins & Morton utilized Building Information Modeling (BIM) for overhead coordination, enabling early clash detection and expediting field production. The team also implemented a detailed phasing plan and maintained open communication with all stakeholders to efficiently share space and resources.
Robins & Morton’s leadership was instrumental in the project’s success, bringing a culture of collaboration, transparency, and accountability to every phase. Their experience with complex industrial and pharmaceutical facilities allowed them to anticipate challenges, streamline coordination among the client, design team, and trade contractors, and deliver innovative solutions to technical and logistical obstacles. This proactive approach ensured the project was completed to the client’s exacting standards, reinforcing Robins & Morton’s reputation as a trusted partner for mission-critical manufacturing environments.
