As enrollment continued to increase for Calhoun Community College, the college made the decision to enlist the help of Robins & Morton to complete a new Math, Science and CIS Building on their satellite campus in Huntsville, Alabama. With Calhoun Community College’s already excellent nursing and science programs, their hope was that the new Math and Science laboratory building would increase enrollment.
As soon as Robins & Morton was brought on as Construction Manager, two major challenges were quickly encountered: the rerouting of a major roadway and the relocating of a major fiber-optics line that ran directly through the project’s footprint. Robins & Morton utilized collaborative efforts with the city, the design team, the college, the local utility company, and AT&T in order to overcome these obstacles. Accompanying the two major challenges, the team also dealt with massive rooftop air handling units, laboratory quality control, and a 10-month rigorous schedule.
Calhoun Community College unveiled its new Math, Science and CIS Building just in time for the fall 2016 semester. The 93,560-square-foot building includes Problem-Based Learning (PBL) classrooms and labs. The three floors of the building contain classrooms, grand foyers, faculty offices, laboratories, collaborative learning spaces, and a beautiful courtyard that ties with the original classroom building. To enhance the building’s features even more, the team was able to orient the building to have stunning views of the rockets at NASA in Huntsville.
