Due to funding, Halifax Health was on the clock to kick off a needed patient tower addition to an existing freestanding emergency department for the rapidly-growing Deltona, Florida, community. Located almost 40 miles outside of congested Orlando, Deltona’s nearly 100,000 residents didn’t have quick access to necessary healthcare services. Moving swiftly, the health system selected Robins & Morton and HKS, Inc., as the construction management and architecture team to lead this project to an efficient delivery.
Because of the race against the clock, the team was challenged to completely restructure industry-standard project delivery – eliminating waste and stretching traditional design and construction processes. By taking a “design-first, listen, modify, then deliver” approach, the team was able to effectively fast-track this project while also encouraging innovation and creativity. Ultimately, keeping the team aligned on communication, quality and efficiency in such a short time frame were among the greatest challenges, but everyone’s focus on the ultimate goal led to unprecedented success. In less than two years, the team reached the finish line in record time and with unmatched quality.
Now open, the $78 million, 196,000-square-foot patient tower houses operating suites, a surgery center and a comprehensive imaging center. The facility also reflects a Lean operational approach as it was designed to enable staff to work more efficiently.
