The Medical University of South Carolina’s original children’s hospital was completed in the late 1980s, but patient needs quickly outgrew the facility’s capacity. In 2015, they selected Robins & Morton, Cumming and Brownstone to provide preconstruction and construction services for the Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital and Pearl Tourville Women’s Pavilion to be located on the corner of Calhoun Street and Courtenay Drive in downtown Charleston, South Carolina.
Now complete, this facility consists of an 11-story bed tower, a six-story diagnostic and treatment building, and houses 250 patient beds. The facility focuses on the advanced and specialized needs of pediatric tertiary and quaternary cases in South Carolina and the Low Country region. These services include a level 4 neonatal intensive care unit, a pediatric intensive care unit, a 36-bed labor and delivery unit including couplet care rooms, a special care nursery, an advanced maternal fetal care center and specialized children’s emergency services, a helipad, and an indoor/outdoor play areas for patients. This hospital will make a lasting impact on the community and the people they serve for many years to come.
