When undertaking the largest healthcare construction program in El Paso history, it was clear that communication would be vital while completing a project of such magnitude. Robins & Morton was faced with renovating a 60-year-old hospital and constructing two major additions to the campus, while working within and around an operational, occupied facility.
The constant, open communication between the team and the hospital allowed for efficient delivery coordination and managing the challenges that come with building on a tight-site. The expansiveness of the facility and occupation of it throughout construction were two major challenges for the team, but Robins & Morton successfully kept the project focused and on schedule.
Despite several obstacles, Robins & Morton completed the expansion, renovation, and new construction of the University Medical Center of El Paso; while providing hundreds of jobs and paving the way for employment opportunities within El Paso’s healthcare industry. The University Medical Center of El Paso features a newly renovated emergency department, Level I Trauma Center, a comprehensive Cardiovascular Services Program, a new in-patient Surgery Center, and a new Chemotherapy and Infusion Center. Along with the renovations and expansions to the facility, a 146-bed women’s hospital and 225,000-square-foot children’s hospital are located in the newly constructed 11-story tower.
