Wofford College – The Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium

Wofford College wanted an ultramodern arena for their basketball program, but also wanted it to be timeless, with the ability to host a variety of sporting events. The Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium, funded by former Carolinas Panther owner, Jerry Richardson, would be a game changer for the college’s athletics program. Wofford leadership saw the stadium as a way to provide a new atmosphere, expand the university’s physical footprint and strengthen its branding.

Despite design changes, mid-project additions and a host of unforeseen obstacles, the deadline remained immoveable –the arena had to be ready for occupancy by the first home basketball game, one in which Jerry Richardson himself would attend. Robins & Morton overcame these challenges through the adherence to Building Forward, an internal Lean-focused initiative.

Upon completion, the stadium encompasses more than 123,000 square feet and includes an arena for men’s and women’s basketball; 350-seat arena for volleyball; coaches offices for basketball, volleyball and women’s lacrosse; locker rooms for the home team, visiting team, coaches and officials; conference room and a media room. Rivaling a professional sports venue, the basketball arena features four LED main boards, three LED corner boards and two ribbon boards, and includes Club 51, an entertainment area for club seat holders, and four concession stands, one with a full kitchen.

I can honestly say, that Robins and Morton assembled one of the finest teams that I have had the pleasure of working with during my career. Working extensively with your team on the new Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium - totaling over $39 million in construction costs – was a great experience.

Robins & Morton produced a high level of quality and delivered the project within schedule and under budget despite the complexity of the building. The communication and spirit of collaboration that Robins & Morton brought to the project was unique and present throughout the entire process. They worked seamlessly with our staff, architects, and subcontractors to identify best practices in executing the project and mitigating potential delays in the schedule to ensure the final product not only met but exceeded expectations.
