The Wofford College Quattlebaum Wellness Center, housed in the Hugh R. Black House, is a meticulously restored facility encompassing 4,335 square feet. Located in Spartanburg, South Carolina, the center integrates both historical charm and modern amenities to serve the Wofford College community effectively. This project involved restoring the building’s 19th-century features while incorporating essential infrastructure, such as an ADA-compliant elevator and an abundance of data and electrical outlets. The wellness center now provides nursing services, limited labs, immunizations, physician referrals, and emotional counseling, with the first-floor rooms repurposed as exam rooms and counseling services offered on the second floor.
Robins & Morton’s role in this project was crucial in ensuring the historical integrity of the building, especially in preserving the original multi-layered brick walls and rough-hewn joists. These were adeptly addressed by employing a stitch-tie system for brick preservation and sourcing period-specific materials when original components could not be repaired. Additionally, the team installed a VRF system to replace outdated window units, integrating modern HVAC solutions without changing the building’s historic architecture.
Robins & Morton’s commitment to quality and meticulous attention to detail not only restored a vital piece of Wofford College’s history but also paved the way for potential inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. By completing the restoration ahead of schedule, Robins & Morton demonstrated their efficiency and dedication, ultimately providing students with a modern facility with respect to its history.
