Huntsville Projects LEEDing the Way to a More Sustainable Rocket City

As Huntsville, Alabama, grows, Robins & Morton is contributing to its bustling, innovative culture by delivering exceptional projects across the Rocket City.

With the company’s commitment to sustainability and extensive experience in green building certifications, Robins & Morton is a standout choice for many Huntsville organizations that are also striving to ensure a healthy future for their communities and the planet.

Several of Robins & Morton’s clients have recognized the company’s expertise and invited it to act as a sustainability consultant, which is beyond the typical role of a construction manager.

“It’s really gratifying that we’re asked to provide sustainability consulting services as a construction manager,” Senior Sustainability Manager Jackie Mustakas said. “It helps Robins & Morton stand out and demonstrates that our clients have noted our knowledge of sustainable design and construction strategies and associated certifications.”

Recently, Robins & Morton pursued certifications on several projects in the Huntsville area. Here’s a look at their progress.

Redstone Gateway Projects Pursuing Five Certifications

Redstone Gateway, a business park adjacent to Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, is home to many defense, aerospace, and research companies. Robins & Morton has been building in Redstone Gateway and Secured Gateway (inside Gate 9 at Redstone Arsenal) for client COPT Defense Properties since 2012, and over the past two years, it has completed several large projects, including the 8200/8300 building project, the 8000/8100 building project, and the 300 building project.

Now, these projects are pursuing a combined total of five certifications with the help of Robins & Morton’s teams.

The Redstone Gateway 300 project is pursuing a LEED® for Building Design and Construction: Core and Shell Development certification and a LEED® for Interior Design and Construction: Commercial Interiors certification. In addition, they’re pursuing a Designed to Earn ENERGY STAR recognition. This three-story, 215,000-square-foot building is home to the U.S. Army Engineering and Support Center.

The Redstone Gateway 8000 and 8100 projects are being certified together, submitting for a LEED® BD+C: Core and Shell certification. These buildings house offices for several companies.

The Redstone Gateway 8200 and 8300 projects are doing the same, submitting for a LEED® BD+C: Core and Shell certification. The two Class A tilt-wall buildings, leased to Northrop Grumman, total approximately 260,000 square feet and each stand five stories tall.

These projects are in various phases of the LEED® certification process.

“It’s admirable that COPT continues to prioritize growing their portfolio sustainably,” Mustakas said. “It demonstrates their dedication to occupant health and reducing their environmental footprint, which is aligned with our sustainability commitment.”

Lockheed Martin and Signature Projects Pursuing Additional Certifications

Two other projects in Huntsville are also pursuing LEED® certifications. First is our Lockheed Martin Building 412 project, located in Cummings Research Park. They are in the early stages of pursuing a certification under the LEED® for Building Design and Construction: New Construction rating system.

Next is a renovation project at Signature Aviation’s Huntsville International Airport location. They are also pursuing a LEED® BD+C: New Construction certification and are farther along in the process.

“We’re working to certify these projects consecutively in the same area,” Mustakas said. “With each one, we’re continuing to refine our processes and enhance our sustainable contributions — contributions verified by a third party through these certifications.”

On the jobsite, Robins & Morton team members put in the time to carry out inspections and document our sustainable material procurement to ensure that these projects achieve certification.

“I always want to brag on our team members when talking about these projects,” Mustakas said. “Their commitment to sustainability and quality document management, both for our needs and our clients’ requirements, is amazing.”
