AdventHealth Winter Haven ER

The AdventHealth Winter Haven ER is a single-story, 20,000-square-foot freestanding emergency department located near LEGOLAND Resort in Winter Haven, Florida. This facility, completed in May 2024, includes 24 patient beds and features resuscitation, bariatric, isolation, obstetric-friendly, and pediatric-friendly rooms. Additionally, the ER offers lab services and imaging capabilities, and it is equipped with a helipad to facilitate critical patient transfers. This project represents the first phase of a multi-phase healthcare development planned for the 42-acre site, which will eventually include a full-service hospital and a medical office building.

Robins & Morton faced several challenges during the AdventHealth Winter Haven project. One of the first was the project’s fast-tracked schedule. To complete construction in only 10 months, the team decided to use the tilt-wall construction process. The tilt-wall method involves casting concrete panels horizontally and then lifting them by crane into a vertical position to form the building’s walls. This process was particularly beneficial in the Winter Haven project, as it allowed the team to erect the walls quickly, completing the foundation and walls in just 30 days. In total, 50 individual concrete pours were executed, averaging four pours per week. This approach not only sped up the construction timeline but also ensured high-quality and durable structures, aligning with the project’s fast-tracked nature and budget requirements.

The next challenge included managing early-release mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) equipment. Although already purchased in bulk for multiple AdventHealth projects, the equipment needed to meet the unique requirements of the Winter Haven facility. By collaborating with Robins & Morton’s internal MEP experts, the team was able to ensure seamless systems integration.

During this project, Robins & Morton’s construction management approach exhibited an emphasis on collaboration, continuous improvement, and a learning culture — guided by its Building Forward® philosophy. Robins & Morton utilized technology and prefabrication, while also leveraging its network of internal experts, which enhanced the project’s efficiency and quality.
